Clinical Education at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, St Asaph

Useful information

  • Accommodation.  Medical students are housed in a new award-winning accommodation block on site and within 3 or 4 minutes stroll from the main hospital.  Individual accommodation comprises bedroom/study area with an en-suite shower room.  A communal kitchen, lounge area and a full size bathroom serve four flats.  Each student room has internet access provided.  Domestic services are provided Monday – Friday.
  • There is a Common Room within the NWCS for use by students, open between 8.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m., with hot water, a fridge and computer access with free printing (reasonable use policy).  There is also a LCD TV.
  • The Library is open for borrowing items during normal office hours but can be accessed 24 hrs per day via a library card.  The library offers all the usual services (wide range of books and journals and photocopying facilities) and also has two Wyse terminals for connecting to Cardiff University.  The Library was awarded Level 1 accreditation with distinction by the University of Wales College of Medicine in May 2002, with services measured against the standards of the UK Library and Information Commission.
  • Undergraduate Office.  The Undergraduate Manager and Undergraduate Administrator can be found in the new, purpose built NWCS facilities above the new Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory.

The Undergraduate Manager contacts all students by email prior to their arrival.  Accommodation keys are available from 3.00 p.m. the day before the placement starts and can be collected from the 24 hr porter’s lodge, which is situated half way down the main corridor on the right hand side as one enters the hospital through the main entrance.

An induction session for students is held on the first morning, covering such topics as library orientation, security passes, paperwork, etc.

Below are some comments from students recently on placement at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd:

  • Home from home, lovely en suite, great kitchens/ sitting rooms.
  • Consultant led teaching was of a very high standard with plenty of opportunity to get hands-on.
  • All deserve recognition for being fantastic teachers and allowing us to have such great opportunities whilst treating us as equals and making us feel so welcome and relaxed.  Really was fantastic placement.
  • Excellent teaching, made freely available.  Friendly staff.
  • We have all been extremely well looked after.
  • Every doctor that we came into contact with deserves recognition!  We had an endless supply of teaching and encouragement from all the staff, they all dedicated ample time to us.
  • This has by far and away been my most successful placement.  This has been because of the quality and amount of teaching, plus the staff's friendly attitude.
  • Organisation of the week was excellent.  Teaching was very good from all consultants especially Mr ***.  Theatre and clinic opportunities were well balanced.
  • Really great accommodation – makes such a difference – especially when being away from Cardiff.  And the cleaning ladies were so nice!
  • This is one of the most student friendly hospitals I have been placed at.  Undergrad facilities were fantastic.
  • The ungergrad people were very helpful and organised the whole placement exceptionally well crossing all of the t's and dotting the i's.
