Clinical Education at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, St Asaph

Ysbyty Glan Clwyd Hospital

The North Wales Clinical School is responsible for the provision of clinical placements for medical students within the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (Central Area).  Glan Clwyd is one of the three district general hospitals in North Wales and is located in Bodelwyddan on the A55 North Wales expressway. The hospital is set in beautiful surroundings on a green field site only four miles from Rhyl and the sea. The hospital serves the population of the coastal towns, especially busy in summer, and the rural towns inland.  There are about 47,000 A & E attendances per annum; 154,000 out-patients per annum; 26,000 day cases and 38,000 in-patient admissions each year (1998 figures).

Each academic year Cardiff University medical students from years three, four and five rotate through departments within the Board, undertaking the clinical experience required to complete eight different modules and projects.  This means that at any one time there can be approximately 50 students gaining experience in varying clinical settings.  Students stay for between five and eight weeks before returning to their base in Cardiff.

The North Wales Clinical School within the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (Central Area) is leading the way in the development and delivery of Interprofessional Education and helping the development of the Multidisciplinary Teams responsible for patient care.
