North Wales Clinical School

Clinical Education at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor

The North Wales Clinical School provides clinical placements for Cardiff University School of Medicine students within the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (Western area). This is a large and sparsely populated area covering 1500 square miles, the largest concentration of populations being on the north coast.

For medical students, experience is offered at Ysbyty Gwynedd, a modern acute District General Hospital of 542 beds in the University City of Bangor, and Llandudno Hospital (147 beds) in the attractive seaside resort of Llandudno some 20 miles away.

Ysbyty Gwynedd, the headquarters of the Health Board, is a District General Hospital providing a comprehensive range of acute medical and surgical services, large Emergency Department, gynaecological and maternity services and special care baby unit.  The rural nature of Gwynedd has resulted in the development of a wider array of clinical specialties than one would associate with DGH in a more urban area.  Excellent diagnostic facilities are available including Computerised Tomographic Screening (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Cardiff students from years two to five complete their clinical placements and projects in Bangor each year.  On average, we have about 50 students join us for each rotation, and each rotation lasts for between 5 and 8 weeks.
