Wrexham and the Area

  • Wrexham is the largest town in North Wales (pop. 70,000) and is situated near to the Welsh/English border.  This means that students on placement in Wrexham will be able to access facilities in nearby Chester (10 minutes by car), Liverpool (40 minutes) and Manchester (one hour) and there are good rail and bus links to these cities.  Wrexham is a 40 minute drive from the North Wales coast and an hour and a half from the beautiful Snowdonia countryside; again there are bus and rail links.  Llangollen and Bala are nearby for those interested in outdoor pursuits and water sports.  Good shopping, theatre and sports facilities can all be found in the area.  Wrexham’s parish church, St. Giles, is classed as one of the seven wonders of Wales.  The nearest National Trust property, Erddig, is just outside the town and this interesting house and gardens are certainly worth a visit.  Another National Trust property, Chirk Castle, is only a few miles away.  Carrying the Llangollen canal 126ft above the River Dee, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is a masterpiece of Georgian engineering, stretching across some of the most glorious countryside in the country.
  • Wrexham is the main commercial, retail, educational and cultural centre in North Wales and is often termed the ‘capital of North Wales’.  The town centre offers shops, restaurants, bars, banks, a public library, swimming pool, tennis centre, gym and cinema, all within easy walking distance. The new retail development at Eagles Meadow also includes a bowling alley.  There are no on-site gym facilities at the hospital but there are several available in the town, with a discount for medical staff and students having been negotiated.  There are two famous racetracks in the area, Chester and Bangor-on-Dee.  Major theatres and concert venues are available in nearby Liverpool and Manchester, in addition to the excellent Theatr Clwyd in the town of Mold that attracts many major productions.
